Ancestral Grounds Coffee Bar

Dedicated to the people of the plains, past and present, whose stewardship of earth continues to inspire.

Location: Current State Coffee | Shawnee, KS
Completion: February 4, 2026

Ancestral Grounds is a one-of-a-kind service bar commissioned by the founders of Current State Coffee for their flagship location in downtown Shawnee, Kansas. Custom-designed by Civic Saint in collaboration with WNB Architects, the piece serves as the structural centerpiece of the Current State experience.

Hand-rammed using a signature palette of pigmented local soils, the bar is a tactile demonstration of earthen materiality in a contemporary commercial setting. The design features soft-curved corners and undulated stratification that echo the natural aesthetic of cut canyon stone while evoking the windswept Kansas plains—a tribute to the Indigenous Nations whose ancestral mastery of earthen architecture continues to inspire the Civic Saint mission.

Beyond its function, Ancestral Grounds serves as a high-traffic proof-of-concept for the durability of our GeoNova™ binder systems and a preview of the signature rammed earth feature walls integrated into every Stonehome design.

We invite you to visit the project in person, run your hands along the earth, and savor your current state of being.

Sustainability + Impact

By choosing Ancestral Grounds over traditional poured concrete, Current State Coffee successfully offset the carbon equivalent of driving a standard passenger vehicle from Kansas City to New York City.
